1.Introduction 2.Etiquette 3.Terms/Meanings 4.Character Creation 5.Five Rules
1. Introduction For those who are new to RP-ing just read this and get yourself familiar with the whole world of RP-ing. It's very easy to RP so no worries!
Anyone can add in anything you want, since I usually ramble on and tend to miss stuff out Don’t mind the random metaphors and similes...
Anyway! Let's get this tutorial started. If you’re looking for something in particular simply hit both Ctrl and “F” and type in what you want to read.
2. Etiquette The way you act, speak and whatnot to others. For those who do not know, typing in caps like such: H3LlO! 3V3RY1! That isn’t really wanted here. Please, write everything in full, but you do not need to capitalise every word. Like So On And...Also swearing, posting immature posts and constantly posting the same message (spamming) will only make you unpopular and possibly get you banned. Read the rules. Be polite – no one comes onto the internet to get abuse. -1: Short posts are annoying, long posts get a little irritating to read (especially if it’s only describing what the person looks like within 4000 words). So don’t ramble on too much – read what you write and make sure it makes sense. From around 200 words – 300 words would be considered “ideal posts”. They are easy to read and usually have good detail within them.
-2: I do understand that people use short hand. Such as “g2g” and “c u tmoz.” I do use it on occasion however, when RPG-ing there is nothing less painful to your eyes (except maybe bleach and neon lighting) to try to decode a four hundred word post, especially if the post consists of bad grammar, spelling and is written like it belonged to a three year old who just learned what the capitalisation key does. Or rather found the keyboard. If you are a terrible spelling (like I am) then open up a word document and type your posts’ in that (or go to dictionary.com for help on spelling a word.)
-3: God-Mode. Basically it is “the” most annoying thing ever to read. Sorry, but it's my number one pet peeve do it and I will send an army of mutant sloths to you. Not really, but it does annoy a lot of people. An example of god-or-perfect-mode:
[I just couldn’t believe that I got the highest mark on that test even though I don’t go to any classes, and that I just recently got engaged to [insert well-known-celebrity name] and that I’m now telepathic because I had a very bad childhood and survived a rampage by a well known serial killer.]
No. Just no. In fact I will seriously get on my hands and knees and beg for people never to do this. I will never forget the RPG of one girl whom made her character have eyes that changed colour... which corresponded to her mood. Of course she also had studied karate and bet up some random person she made up to show everyone that no one could mess with her... Yeah because that was realistic.
3. Terms/Meanings
IC: In Character – This is when you are role playing, you are therefore your character. You don't need to state this when you're RP-ing, only really if you keep jumping between IC and OOC.
OCC: Out of Character – This is when you are simply “you” look below for an example:
[ “I can’t believe I have to muck out the stables....again!” I moaned, I couldn’t help but feel as if the owner of these stables really didn’t want me to study for those darn written exams. OCC: Hey, so what are you doing tonight? I’m totally bored...though I think I’ll go get something to munch, be back in a minute. ]
Troll: Basically it is a person whom usually signs up to – well to annoy and abuse everyone else on the game and try to make everyone upset. Nine times out of ten they usually join places to steal e-mail addresses in order to spam. Never reply to a Troll. Ignore them and they disappear.
4. Character Creation This will probably be the longest part of the tutorial since depending how much you think on the character the more real they become. Of course think about how they look, but it is basically how they act, respond and develop which makes your character unique.
I usually never start of with a name because names already hold some sort of link to what you think of the character. Yes, before you've even made them, and no I'm not lying. Say for example everyone you met that was called... Sophie was nice and everyone that you had met named Alan was ugly, then you already have some bias thoughts happening and wouldn't name your lovely hunk of a man Alan (No offense to any Alan's out there...random names being used ^^'').
Work on your person's general appearance hair colour, eye colour all that bland, basic, boring stuff. That doesn't mean you have to go into major details about the characters weight or height. Telling everyone that George is overweight by only one pound doesn't make us think of someone thin or fit - just say, "overweight, average, curvy" something like that - these small details of exact weight and height and BMI don't really change by how people portray your character it's the personality that does that.
I would suggest that you pick equal amount of good traits (virtues) with equal amount of bad traits (vices). Perfect players come about when you put in the vices column "She's too pretty everyone wants to go out with her and she doesn't get any piece and quiet." Or rather you leave the vices column completely blank and the virtue column is so cram-backed you can't actually describe your character other than saying, "perfect".
Here is a link to a lovely site which is filled with Traits - the positive side and the negative side of that trait. http://www.gurusoftware.com/gurunet/Personal/Factors.htm You don't have to choose everything but make sure they make sense. Don't go for "rebellious" then somewhere put in "respects authority." It's one or the other - pick!
After you have got your characters image, and personality worked out, now it's to give them a name. For one I would suggest you read names out. Since sometimes it sounds as if you're trying to speak four languages which have blended together with a blunt kitchen utensil and now sound something resembling that of a zombie trying to sing “I’m Blue” by Eiffel 65.
If they are a foreign student from Japan who has lived there all their life then don't give them a Russian name. Likewise with British people having Japanese names? Also names have meaning in different countries. Be aware of that.
In Russian, Tala is a male name, in India it is female. Both of which mean the same thing, 'stalking wolf' or just plain “wolf” but in Italy it means, ''Christ's birthday". So don't pick a name simply because of its meaning because it could be utter nonsense in another region of the world.
And another thing, your character changes clothes, at least I hope they do, so it is not necessary to type up their fashion portfolio of what they wear when we first meet them.
Also a little tip, if you can't think of anything to type - describe a blade of grass! In other words, if you can't think of anything -- ramble on about the environment and the atmosphere or something that your character can see, feel, hear or smell. ^^
Hope this covers the basics... Happy Role-Playing and hope you have fun at EEC!
